Soul Over Speed: The Maker Behind Mama Maize

Artist, founder

In 2021, Gillian was shown a dream of dripping in corn jewelry—and she answered the call. Combining her love of growing corn and slow regenerative fashion with her anger at the damage caused by gem mining, she set out to create something the world had never seen: resin corn jewelry.

Through years of trial and error, Gillian’s adoration for these seeds and their radiant, natural colors fueled her vision—to share with you their gifts of wonder, healing, and beauty.

Now, Gillian plants seeds every spring with her beloveds in Grass Valley, California and Taos, New Mexico. Following the fall harvest, she dries the cobs for a full year before they undergo a meticulous, high-touch, labor-intensive epoxying process that transforms their kernels into wearable gems.

Each Mama Maize piece is a living antidote to a world that demands speed over soul. When you support us, you are literally watering the seeds of a more intact and beautiful world.

  • Growing corn

Year after year, we plant only the best seeds for jewelry in early Spring near our studio in Northern California, lovingly and intentionally tending to our corn plants and flowers through the harvest in October.

  • Harvesting

We gather to celebrate and welcome these new seeds into the world, carefully and slowly unwrapping each cob with child-like awe at each unique rainbow palette more creative and colorful than the last.

  • Selecting seeds

After waiting for the seeds to dry connected to the cob, we remove the seeds from the cob and sort out the most radiant and rich colors to be transformed into jewelry, keeping enough aside for next year's crop.

  • Creating gems

An 18k gold top with loop is secured on each corn. We don't drill through the seeds as that weakens them. Instead, we coat them in a non-toxic, BPA-free, food safe coating that protects the seeds from the elements.
