Slow-grown gems: The Story Behind Mama Maize
Following the footsteps of her maternal great-grandmother, Gillian loves working in the garden and creating adornment art.
In 2020, she was given a surprising vision to combine these two passions through elevated corn jewelry.
Although she didn’t yet know how the why was crystal—to heal the Earth and reconnect women with the power of seeds.
Now, Gillian grows 'Glass Gem' corn every year, selecting only the brightest seeds to plant. After the harvest, she transforms their dazzling kernels into jewelry. Each piece reflects her dreams for our beautiful future on Earth, her inspiration from the American Southwest, and her respect for heritage.
Gillian lives in Northern California with her loving partner, Nick, and their German Shepherd mix, Kaya.

How we grow our Gem Corn jewels

Growing corn
Read MoreYear after year, we plant only the best seeds for jewelry in early Spring near our studio in Northern California, lovingly and intentionally tending to our corn plants and flowers through the harvest in October.
-
Harvesting
We gather to celebrate and welcome these new seeds into the world, carefully and slowly unwrapping each cob with child-like awe at each unique rainbow palette more creative and colorful than the last.
-
Selecting seeds
After waiting for the seeds to dry connected to the cob, we remove the seeds from the cob and sort out the most radiant and rich colors to be transformed into jewelry, keeping enough aside for next year's crop.

Creating gems
An 18k gold top with loop is secured on each corn. We don't drill through the seeds as that weakens them. Instead, we coat them in a non-toxic, BPA-free, food safe coating that protects the seeds from the elements.
